Curriculum

During the virtual program, fellows will be familiarized with editorial guidelines of Minority Africa and will work on and report stories for the publication. They undergo intensive reporting training regarding how to cover minorities in an ever-changing world, work with editors in the Minority Africa newsroom, and are required to produce at least two stories every month.

Fellows will also be trained by a strong network of journalists who work for or have worked across the continent with the Associated Press, Agence France Presse, Reuters, RFI, CNN, The Guardian, Time, and began legacy media companies tackling present media problems including one praised by former US President Barack Obama.

Newsroom Experience

Minority Africa fellows work for the publication as reporters and are paid a monthly allowance. They cover stories for the website, take rotational slots as Managing Editor, and create a newsletter as a cohort.

Training

Fellows are trained by a faculty of seasoned media professionals including journalists from the Minority Africa newsroom and from or have worked/working with other news organizations such as the Associated Press, BBC, CNN, The Guardian, AFP, and more. The fellowship will cover subject areas including:

Mentorship

During the fellowship, MA fellows are paired with internal and external mentors (from the Minority Africa newsroom and from other media organizations) who monitor their progress and guide them in reporting and publishing their stories.

The Fellowship Experience

The Minority Africa fellowship is 100% virtual. Over a six-month period, fellows collaborate remotely with editors, mentors, trainers, and other fellows in their cohort. The fellowship will facilitate, where possible, intra country reporting travel for fellows giving them a chance to cover stories and get experience directly from the field. These trips are planned and undertaken in accordance with fellowship policies.
